Bronze sculpture and oil paintings

For most of my adult life, I have focused my artistic efforts on figurative art through the media of sculpture and painting. I am a full-time artist and run and operate a very high energy art studio and gallery where many creatives converge to make art and be inspired by others, both young and old. My love for painting and sculpting humans has remained steadfast throughout my career and I am looking forward to bringing my work into the public arena through public art projects.

Clay, pastels, sculpture

I began my career in clay, drawing, and sculpture in 1970, opening my first shop, Sabino Stoneware Pottery, on Meyer Avenue in Barrio Viejo in 1972. I currently teach at "Romero House Potters" on the Tucson Museum of Art campus (since 1972) and also recently at Lew Sorensen Community Center. In clay, my work is functional as well as sculptural. Figure drawing has always been of interest. I love the feel of clay as it is created by my hands into the vessel of my choosing. I prefer to sell my own work so as to meet and interact with the person who admires my expertise.

Monotype, printmaking, painting, drawing, papier mache

My artwork is inspired by animals, plants, biology, philosophy, mysticism, humor and poetry. For me, all image making extends from drawing, which itself is an act of thinking & research. In addition to drawing, painting, printmaking, and other genres, I also enjoy writing, and often weave text and images together. My latest dream is to learn animation and explore approaches to art installation with an ecological theme. I am also an instructor at The Drawing Studio.

Acrylic

People feel invited to touch my paintings because of the tactile qualities. I approach the canvas with spontaneous strokes loaded with thick color, heavy textures and brilliant tones in continuous and broken movement to create a multi-layered surface undulating with kinetic energy. Mythology, flowers and faces are some of the inspirations executed in a direct, in the moment fashion, with exaggerated color.

Mixed media

My current work, using mostly discarded tin cans found in remote areas of the Sonoran desert, deals with current issues such as the constant search for the elusive "American dream", the crossing of borders, both geographical as well as emotional, and how these acts of trespassing inform social and personal identity. In the borderlands, the role of the outsider is not always clear: who belongs and who is the "other" is always a matter of negotiation.

Steel

This year is the JAGUAR PROJECT.

Two big cats to call attention to Sky Island Alliance and the Northern Jaguar Project. I have dedicated the year to make them and show them and when they sell, donate to each of the two conservation groups that create safety for Jaguars to breed (in Mexico) and the Sky Island Alliance, which promotes good water sources, natural plantings, fire and climate change studies and linkages that allow the cats to wander north when they feel like it on open pathways.

I will have information for what makes the Jaguar Project so worthwhile that I would give up a year of my business.

I am hoping that you will become interested in jaguars too.

Bronze sculpture, silk hangings & wearable art

Quiet source of earth emerges.
The journey of longing transforms us.
Breath of light, ancient wind, restless radiance. . .
Bronze sculptures of flowers, leaves, nests, rest in wood and stone. Willow branches suspend silk hangings to create a sacred space. Rain braids a river softly worn.

This series of artwork is a metaphor for hopes and dreams; a desire for oneness with the earth.

Fused glass

I love to play with colors and geometric patterns, while maintaining an elegance and simplicity and sometimes even whimsy. Fused glass provides bright colors and a relatively quick result.

Charcoal, pencil, oils, stone lithography, woodcuts and wood engravings.

I love being an artist. In life, as in art I am responsive to feelings. They take me beyond to the very essence of the people I paint. My ability to show the inner worth of all people is a gift from the Universe. I paint the 'Indigenous People of the World,' wildlife, nudes and some historic scenes of Tucson.

Acrylic painting

I was an art teacher and elementary librarian for 36 years in Billings, Montana. My art reflects an interest in the books that I read to children. Painting the “whimsical” pictures that you see was a simple decision for me. I paint animals that my students, and parents, enjoyed looking at. I hope you do too!

Oil and pastel

I find drawing and painting to be a profoundly rewarding experience. My goal is to convey the richness of our world, the layers of color and textures, the sense of vastness and the transcendent feeling of serenity I feel when surrounded by nature’s beauty. My hope is that you will experience some of those same feelings as you look at my work
