STUDIO TOUR OCTOBER 21 AND 22, 2017

Linda Ahearn

Picture
Balance
Medium: Bronze sculpture, figurative painting

“I fell in love with oil painting when I was 12 years old and I have been painting ever since. After receiving my BFA with an emphasis in oils, I continued painting every opportunity I could, studying with various instructors, and stretching my skills.

I am a representational painter and love working from life, but I am particularly inspired by the Impressionists and try to keep a fresh and painterly handle with my brush strokes. Every week we hire a different model in costume, so you will see many figurative paintings in my galleries. I love to paint Landscapes as well as Still-Lifes, using both brushwork and palette knife. I paint specific commission pieces, too."

Approaching Storm
Medium: Oil

I love the landscape of the West and my work is an emotional and colorful response to what I see. I am a contemporary landscape painter grounded in the traditions of Impressionism and Expressionism. My work builds on those traditions through the expressive power of paint applied with brushes and palette knives. My painting is formed by years of observing and painting the landscape on location en plein air. I work directly in oil paint outdoors and in the studio creating a contemporary and colorful interpretation of the landscape and architecture of the American Southwest. I love the beauty of these Western States and I am always looking for the visual poetry that tells me to stop and paint.

Peace of the West
Medium:  Oil, watercolor and pencil

Extreme realism describes my passion for art. I am a signature artist of Oil Painters of America and the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. My work has been shown in many galleries throughout the country from Massachusetts to California and in between, including the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Copley Society in Boston.

Reflections and high contrast are my best features. I like to build a dimension that gives one the feeling of being able to lift an object off the canvas.

I started teaching in 1988 and still am teaching art. My goal is to pass on all the tricks and techniques for each student to have the knowledge to proceed to their own goals.

Medium: Steel

The essence of animals that I love, is created in steel.

While I do other forms of art, like drawing with graphite and pastel, the steel work expresses my fondness for movement in a very solid medium.

Live animals relate to us with a look, a breath, and a lick. I am trying to get a little rememberance of that with the steel.

The endangered animals are a memory and warning to protect them, even if seldom seen. Jaguars live here!

From the Seed

Medium: Repurposed Salvage Farm Implements

My entry into the art community was brought on by a find in a local Tucson antique store 3 years ago. I did not, at the time, know what it was but it intrigued me. As it turned out it was a Rotary Hoe Wheel from a salvaged Rotary Hoe/Cultivator farm implement.
I wanted a way to display it at my house,so after some trial and error, I came up with framing it on a plain wood background. That has lead to various other methods of displaying them in what I hope is an appealing manner.
I have taken my interest in that first wheel and now "collect" them. The many different designs, from plain to ornate, have drawn me to want to share them and bring them into homes where they might be appreciated by others for their history and design.

Art and its various expressions has always been part of my life.  I work in a variety of media:  watercolor, acrylics, collage, drawing, and oil pastel. My concepts range from representational to abstract: landscapes (fanciful and representational), flowers, people, and abstractions. Each new project is an adventure.  Since moving to Arizona in 2006 the desert landscape has been a great inspiration.  I also enjoy painting and drawing people from life at Friday afternoon sessions at Toscana Studio.

I create functional stoneware and porcelain in my home studio in a relatively rural area of Tucson where I am inspired daily by the beauty of the desert. My work with clay began as a serious hobby in the mid-70s when I discovered a love of making and using functional pottery. I take pride in making pottery that is well balanced and pleasing to the eye and touch.

Living in the vast open spaces of the Sonoran desert has changed my vision from a vertical to a horizontal perspective.Art and Photography have been a constant in my life; line, texture and contrast have always fascinated me. Capturing the intriguing mysteries and inner souls of people and animals continue to pique my curiosity. My continuing series, "Visions of the West" presents another perspective of the "Western Experience". Now I'm known as the "Brooklyn Cowgirl".

Raku Delight
Medium: Wired Jewelry

Exploring new facets of wired jewelry excites and energizes me . I work with Argentium sterling silver, gold filled wire and copper wire to create new earrings, bracelet and necklace designs with semi-precious stones and gemstones . Styles are sometimes conservative and traditional and then sometimes contemporary and out of the ordinary. Everything I create is one of a kind. I just love what I do and find excuses to do nothing but play in my big jewelry box. Come join me!

 Medium:  Fused glass

I love to play with colors and geometric patterns, while maintaining an elegance and simplicity and sometimes even whimsy. Leaves and the Sonoran desert, where I grew up, provide inspiration for much of my work. Fused glass gives bright colors and a relatively quick result.

Medium: Metal and mosaic

Andrea Edmundson and Victor Quiros are the founders of Upcycle Tucson, a creative re-use arts center. They both create art from recycled and reclaimed materials. Andrea specializes in mosaics, using industrial cast-offs as substrates and found & personal items as tesserae. Victor creates sculptures and metal wall art from scrap metal. He finds his pieces in dumpsters, at scrap yards, and Upcycle Tucson (which sells traditional and quirky arts & crafts supplies). Both are dedicated not only to keeping usable materials out of the landfill, but to educating the public about upcycling/recycling and creating innovative art from scrap. Their motto is "Inspiring quirky people to create recycled arts and crafts."

Medium: Pine needle art

I have been making pine needle baskets for over 10 years, but recently have been combining the pine needles with my pottery. However, I feel the real beauty of a coiled basket is in the coiled center where the basket begins and then takes on an adventure of its own. This can be done using a variety of many stitches, wrappings and even using different colored needles. Each piece is unique from 274 very simple to more complex.

Medium: Acrylic

I have been a elementary librarian/Art teacher in in Public schools for 36 years. The Art that I saw in children’s picture books, I purchased for my libraries, inspires me. I feel Art in children’s books is whimsical and fun to look at. As an artist I have always wanted to capture what those books do. Sometimes I add a little humor in my work and when people ask what kind of Art I create – and I show them a picture of one of my paintings they go: “OH!” with a smile and their face lights up. I like that.
